This lesson on Mind Bites includes three version of this song, you’ll learn the alphabet hand shapes, sounds of the alphabet and signs for the song.
This is the American version of a song we use in class to help children learn their ABCs. It includes the hand shapes for the American Sign Language alphabet. We wanted to have a song then went slow enough for the kids to be able to sing and sign and ultimately learn their letters.

My Baby Can Talk – Exploring Signs introduces babies to twenty-four words and signs to encourage them to explore and begin to communicate about the wonders of the world around them. This playful exploration presents baby’s expanding world in a fun and fascinating way — offering words and signs for colors, foods, nature and play. This program includes a Parent Tutorial focusing on key guidelines to begin signing with babies as well as additional signs for parents to teach their little ones — including signs for emotions such as happy, sad, excited and sorry.
Honored more than twenty prestigious parenting awards and reviewed and endorsed by child psychologists, professionals in the media as well as early childhood educators; the My Baby Can Talk series inspires preverbal communication as well as first spoken words and is the first program featuring preverbal babies signing. Research has shown that babies who use sign language tend to speak sooner with larger vocabularies, show an increase in IQ scores and engage in more sophisticated play.
The My Baby Can Talk series is specifically developed to respect the developmental stage, attention span and intellect of hearing babies from 10 to 36 months. This program includes a Parent Tutorial and a printed Quick Reference Signing Card.
MyBabyCanTalk.com is the premier resource center on the Internet for babies and signing featuring detailed tutorials, background research, and a video dictionary with more than 200 ASL signs that are most important to and appropriate for babies and toddlers.

When did you start signing and when did your baby make his/her first sign?
It was very early, soon after we started. All I did was make the sign for Milk or Cookie every time I said the word. If I said Milk three times in a conversation, I made sure I did the sign every time. I didn’t ask him/her to do it back to me though.
Over time, very soon afterwards, they would do the sign. It’s a survival skill in communication and where they can’t talk, they know that by mimicing that hand movement, it’s a communication.
We used sign for basic words they need. Milk, eat, juice, mommy, daddy, play, happy, wet… I can’t remember them all (they’re 6 and 9 now). It was a FANTASTIC alternative to whining, which is what kids will do if they can’t communicate.
I have a 2 1/2 year old with a speech delay, her therapist wants me to teach her sign language. I also have a 12 month old, and I figure if I’m going to teach one, I should teach both. Any suggestions, books, video’s you could recommend. Thanks!!!
Thanks lucky, I knew sign language years ago, so I am trying to refresh my memory right now.
Baby Signing Time is an awesome set of dvd’s. My 22 mo old started signing at 7 months, and my 10 mo old just did her 3rd sign yesterday. They are for children 3 to 36 months check out the website www.babysigningtime.com I can’t rave enough about this system. It teaches babies ASL simple signs and was created by Rachel who stars in the dvd’s for her daughter Lea who is deaf. None of my children are hearing impaired but I have found this is a great way to communicate with them. Good luck try them out honestly you won’t be disappointed.
Anyone with websites or personal knowledge that is willing to share is appreciated.
I have found many websites but none with really good information.
Hi,
I’m just in the early stages of teaching my son Josh some baby sign language but I’m impressed with what he has learnt very quickly and how useful and reassuring it is for me and my husband to know what he is thinking.
It’s absolutely amazing to see that now, instead of just crying when he is hungry, he will make the sign for ‘food’ so we know exactly what he wants. He can also give the sign for ‘more’and is starting to use the sign for ‘drink’. And all of this is in just a few weeks!
We also like the fact that learning baby sign language apparently leads to children having a higher IQ, having better self esteem and being able to learn faster as they get older.
I am using a baby signing course I found online which includes ebooks, audio and videos. The videos have been particularly useful because I get to actually see exactly how each sign should be done and how it should be taught to Josh. The course is at http://www.easybabysignlanguage.com if you’d like to take a look.
Baby sign language does take a bit of effort, but it’s very rewarding and reassuring so I can fully recommend you give it a try.
