Baby Signing, Sign with your Baby, Baby Sign Language BSL, ASL, Makaton, Hertfordshire, Garcia, UK

March 9, 2010 - 7:26 am 2 Comments

http://www.thebeststartclub.com
Baby Signing Language a form of gestural communication. This very simple form of communication allows baby to understand and be understood long before speech develops in babies. Sign to baby whilst speaking allows baby the experience of seeing the “word” and hearing the word at the same time which enhances their absorption of language.
This is a very natural way to promote speech and early communication between parent and child.

In this video you will see many babies signing with their families. It’s simple, it’s effective and magical to watch.

Whilst these babies are using ASL many of these signs are also the same as BSL.
Aren’t they wonderful!

How did you teach your baby sign language?

March 9, 2010 - 6:46 am 4 Comments

I have a 7 month old. My husband and I have talked about teaching him sign language. We have read the benefits of this. We bought the Baby Einstein’s My First Signs DVD this weekend. We do not know where to start.

I started about a month ago. Still waiting for my 8.5 month old to make a sign, LOL! But it’s all about patience (plus, 7 – 8 months is a good time to start signing but don’t expect results right away). Here’s what I did / do:

I bought the DVD and book from Joseph Garcia. Check out Amazon.com. He’s a recognized “expert” in teaching babies sign language based on American Sign Language (I’m sure the Baby Einstein is based on the same sign language so probably no need to buy another DVD).

First, I chose the 3 signs (as he suggested) I wanted to start with. I did this for 2 reasons:
1. To keep it simple for the baby: too many signs and they will get confused.
2. To keep it simple for me! LOL! In the beginning I found I forgot to make the signs.

Since consistency is key start with just a few. The signs I chose were “eat,” “milk” and “cat” (because we have one and I thought I would be cute for her to sign it!). After they start making these signs you can start to add more.

Then, each time we go to eat I make the sign at her eye level and say the word (making sure she sees me do it). I also make the sign/say the word while she is eating. I do the same each time she has a bottle and each time the cat comes around.

Again, consistency and patience are key. Think of it as something fun to do and not a must-have.

Good luck!

Is it really beneficial for babies to learn sign language?

March 9, 2010 - 6:46 am 13 Comments

In my own opinion, I think it might make them too lazy to speak if you give them the sign language option. what do you think moms?
I don’t feel the need for sign language, my baby’s cues and babbles are pretty easy to read. I think as long as we are truly connected to our babies and really know them we can skip sign language. I have quite a few moms talking me into sign language so I just wanna find out if most of you moms out there do it?

My mother-in-law is a speach and language pathologist. We talked alot about baby sign language. I asked her the smae question about making the child lazy. She said language development could be compared to learning to walk. Just because your baby learns to crawl before he learns to walk doesn’t mean he is not going to want to progress to the walking. Same with language. The signs is like crawling and gives the child an extra tool to express himself. She said ti actually encourages talking. I got a baby sign language kit for my baby shower and am really excited about it!

What is a good age to start baby sign language?

March 9, 2010 - 6:46 am 14 Comments

I have an a 6 month old baby. I want to start teaching him baby sign language. I was just wondering if any of you out there have taught your baby how to sign and how it went. Is it an easy process for them to learn? Please give me all the details you have available like how long it took , how often you practice it, etc….. Thanks . Any additional info is greatly appreciated.
Just for the record, because I don’t know if it makes a difference or not, my baby is a hearing baby, I just thought I’d point that out.

Start signing now! You can sign “milk” to your newborn when it’s time to nurse or time for a bottle. Sign “sleep” at nap and bedtimes. Take your baby’s hands and help them sign “more” in-between each spoonful. This will help integrate signs into your daily routine. Soon the repetition and reinforcement will occur naturally as your infant grows. It will also help your infant realize that crying is not the only way of communicating. Most children adapt signs to whatever they are physically able to do. As their fine motor skills develop further, their signs will also develop. This is very similar to the pattern in speech development; “Da-da” suddenly becomes “Daddy” or “Dad” or in Leah’s case, “Aaron!” (LOL)
Also, f you start signing with your newborn, they may not reciprocate until 8-14 months old. Good Luck
