Is it really beneficial for babies to learn sign language?

March 9, 2010 - 6:46 am 13 Comments

In my own opinion, I think it might make them too lazy to speak if you give them the sign language option. what do you think moms?
I don’t feel the need for sign language, my baby’s cues and babbles are pretty easy to read. I think as long as we are truly connected to our babies and really know them we can skip sign language. I have quite a few moms talking me into sign language so I just wanna find out if most of you moms out there do it?

My mother-in-law is a speach and language pathologist. We talked alot about baby sign language. I asked her the smae question about making the child lazy. She said language development could be compared to learning to walk. Just because your baby learns to crawl before he learns to walk doesn’t mean he is not going to want to progress to the walking. Same with language. The signs is like crawling and gives the child an extra tool to express himself. She said ti actually encourages talking. I got a baby sign language kit for my baby shower and am really excited about it!

Parents who started teaching their babies sign language at 6 months or earlier?

February 21, 2010 - 10:46 am 3 Comments

When did you start signing and when did your baby make his/her first sign?

It was very early, soon after we started. All I did was make the sign for Milk or Cookie every time I said the word. If I said Milk three times in a conversation, I made sure I did the sign every time. I didn’t ask him/her to do it back to me though.

Over time, very soon afterwards, they would do the sign. It’s a survival skill in communication and where they can’t talk, they know that by mimicing that hand movement, it’s a communication.

We used sign for basic words they need. Milk, eat, juice, mommy, daddy, play, happy, wet… I can’t remember them all (they’re 6 and 9 now). It was a FANTASTIC alternative to whining, which is what kids will do if they can’t communicate.

Does teaching babies sign language boost their intelligence later in life?

February 21, 2010 - 10:46 am 5 Comments

Anyone with websites or personal knowledge that is willing to share is appreciated. :-) I have found many websites but none with really good information.

Hi,

I’m just in the early stages of teaching my son Josh some baby sign language but I’m impressed with what he has learnt very quickly and how useful and reassuring it is for me and my husband to know what he is thinking.

It’s absolutely amazing to see that now, instead of just crying when he is hungry, he will make the sign for ‘food’ so we know exactly what he wants. He can also give the sign for ‘more’and is starting to use the sign for ‘drink’. And all of this is in just a few weeks!

We also like the fact that learning baby sign language apparently leads to children having a higher IQ, having better self esteem and being able to learn faster as they get older.

I am using a baby signing course I found online which includes ebooks, audio and videos. The videos have been particularly useful because I get to actually see exactly how each sign should be done and how it should be taught to Josh. The course is at http://www.easybabysignlanguage.com if you’d like to take a look.

Baby sign language does take a bit of effort, but it’s very rewarding and reassuring so I can fully recommend you give it a try.

Ally

Does anyone have any experience with sign language for babies?

February 3, 2010 - 6:19 am 5 Comments

I wanted to teach my son sign language just because I think it would be neat to do and I have the time to do it but he is only 4 months, how old should babies be before you start teaching them? Has anyone done it and have any comments on it? What dvd did you use? Thanks!

I started teaching my grandson sign language at six months. As a sign language interpreter, I did not use tapes of any kind. I started with object and sign such as the sign for milk when I gave him his bottle. Please don’t do this because it would be “neat”. This is a language belonging to a culture and not something for amusement. It seems like you are bored and looking for something to do with your son. Please look for something else to do such as join a mommy and baby group. I involved my grandson in sign language because I was working with deaf children and he would be socializing with the children and I wanted him to be able to communicate with the other children.

Baby Sign Language Works for Babies and Parents

August 31, 2008 - 4:03 am No Comments

Here is a great video showing how easily babies can communicate with baby sign language.
Not only is this baby signing well, she is saying the words too and has a head start with her vocabulary.
